Paediatric Acupuncture: Gentle, Natural Healing for Children

Paediatric acupuncture is an ancient yet gentle healing practice that supports children's health naturally. Unlike adult acupuncture, which often involves needles, paediatric acupuncture can be completely non-invasive, using techniques like Shonishin (Japanese needle-free acupuncture), paediatric Tui Na massage, and gentle stimulation of acupuncture points to restore balance in your child's body.

Sun Simiao, a revered Chinese physician from the 6th and 7th centuries, emphasised the delicate nature of children's health, saying:

“When treating children, one must be especially gentle and careful. Their Qi is as delicate as a budding flower, and should be nurtured with the lightest touch.”

Paediatric acupuncture treatments are based on this wisdom ensuring that treatments are always gentle, effective, and tailored to the unique needs of your child.

Paediatric acupuncture can help in a wide range of common childhood concerns, including:

✅  Colic & Digestive Issues – Helps soothe colic, constipation, diarrhoea, and reflux.
✅  Sleep Disorders – Encourages better sleep and relaxation.
✅  Allergies & Asthma – Supports immune function and reduces symptoms.
✅  Anxiety & Hyperactivity – Calms the nervous system and supports emotional balance.
✅  Eczema & Skin Conditions – Helps relieve itching and inflammation naturally.
✅  Ear Infections & Frequent Colds – Strengthens immunity and reduces recurrent infections.

Paediatric acupuncture works by restoring the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) in the body. When Qi is balanced, the body functions optimally, preventing and treating illness. Unlike adult acupuncture, paediatric treatments often involve:

Shonishin
The Japanese term shonishin, meaning ‘children’s needle’ refers to a method of treating children that dates back to the 17th century.  Instead of needles, it uses various tools to stroke or tap areas on the child’s body.  Shonishin is a light and non-invasive method of treatment which can bring about profound changes. A paediatric acupuncturist may use it on its own or combine it with another treatment method.  It can be used in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, and on children of all ages, from babies to teenagers.

Tui Na Massage
Paediatric tui na is a wonderfully effective system of massage.  Whilst being a systematic, medical treatment, it developed out of a mother’s innate instinct to stroke, touch and caress her baby or young child.  Therefore, it is practical, intuitive and easy to deliver.  Babies and children usually love it.
Paediatric tui na may be used on its own or combined with the other modalities described.

Acupuncture
If used acupuncture is done sparingly. The needles are inserted briefly and with a gentle technique.

Paediatric Acupuncture sessions are designed to be gentle, fun, and child-friendly:
1️⃣  Consultation & Assessment – The practitioner discusses health concerns and evaluates the child's Qi balance.
2️⃣  Gentle Stimulation of acupuncture points – Using Shonishin, Tui Na, or fine needles (if needed), the practitioner applies a soothing, customised treatment.
3️⃣  Relaxation & Healing – Sessions are quick (15-30 minutes), ensuring the child feels comfortable and safe.
4️⃣  Home treatments – Parents may be shown easy acupressure, or massage,  techniques that they can use at home to speed up and enhance the treatment process.

Sun Simiao stressed the importance of supporting a child's natural energy, stating:

“If a child is well nourished and their Qi flows harmoniously, disease will not take root.”

By correcting imbalance early in life, paediatric acupuncture fosters long-term wellness and resilience. Let us help our children not just survive but thrive.
