The use of acupuncture to help prepare women for labour and indeed during labour is an under used application of a very useful and appreciated tool. As the conclusions of this study clearly show. That is why we believe that acupuncture should be more widely available and supported within our maternity health service.
Firstly patients highly valued the availability of acupuncture within the maternity service as it enhanced their patient journey.
Women who received acupuncture had more normal births (less surgical births).
Women who received acupuncture required less intrapartum analgesia (pain relief).
Women who received acupuncture required fewer components of an induction of labour.
Women who received acupuncture had a reduced length of a hospital stay.
